About
Born in Eldoret, C.J. S. Lall acquired his primary and secondary school education at the Uasin Gishu primary and secondary schools in Eldoret, before proceeding to the Federal Republic of Germany for architectural studies, followed by post graduate studies at the Technical University of Berlin specializing in hospitals and public health services. In 1972 he was appointed a tutor at the Technical University of Berlin, in the department of planning and building in the third world countries. Concurrent to the tutorship he become a partner with Gruppe Sued, an architectural and planning practice in Berlin.
On returning to Kenya in 1975, he joined Mutiso Menezes International, architects and planning consultants, after being promoted to the ranks of project architect and practice associate, became a partner of the firm in 1980.
With over 35 years of working experience in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, W. Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland, C.J. S. Lall has been involved in a wide range of planning, design, contract administration and implementation of commercial, health and welfare, recreation, religious, educational, scientific, information, residential, utilities, civil and engineering facilities.
He is the founder and managing executive of the practice operating under the name of Chani Lall Partnership, Architects.

As a partner of the firm has been responsible for the design, co-ordination and administration of major projects as listed under projects undertaken. This responsibility includes co-ordination of the services of quantity surveyors, structural, mechanical, electrical, landscape, energy and planning consultants. Investigating and integrating alternative energy systems and environmentally appropriate technology has been a major involvement.
In addition to project co-ordination, joint Administration responsibility for the firm’s operations in Nairobi included direction of the professional and technical personnel, monitoring and management of staff and financial resources.

U.N. ACCOMMODATION IN NAIROBI HEADQUARTERS FOR UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME (UNEP):
40,000 m.sq. of mixed accommodation on a 40 acre site at gigiri on the north western outskirts of Nairobi.
The development of the site forms an extension of the temporary UNEP headquarters designed and built in 1975 and incorporates extensive interior and external landscaping.
The accommodation itself comprises of extensive conference, library, communications, office, recreational and welfare facilities.
The project included the co-ordination of structural, mechanical, electrical, landscape, catering and energy consultants and has embraced investigations and integration of alternative energy systems and environmentally appropriate technologies.
The project forms a second stage in the provision of accommodation for the international agency begun in 1975 to design and supervise the construction of approximately 11,000 m.sq. of office accommodation within the period of less than 9 months.
It was achieved, including the landscaping of the spaces between the individual buildings, by means of rationalization of a standardized office planning and constructive system utilizing only locally available materials and technical skills.
The original development has been integrated into the second stage project.
Project construction commenced in 1982 and completed in 1984.
